Stick a pin in me . . . I'm done.

I have been a part of this wonderful community of
quilting hoppers for a few months now and I have enjoyed
each one so much. But I am going to have to step
back a bit as we are getting busy
preparing for the arrival of the baby.
There are only so many hours in the week
and I have so much sewing and painting
and shopping to do.
I will be around,
but mostly on instagram and facebook
I would love it if you would follow me over there.

I want to thank Madame Samm and Kristen for
all the hard work they did to put this hop together.
Today is my day to share my pincushions.

I have to admit I don't use a pin cushion.
because
 I rarely use pins.
Mostly because I am afraid I might drop one
and it would end up in a doggie paw
or worse, a doggie tummy.

But
pincushions are cute
 and
a great way to use up scraps.
So I made one.

Actually, I made two,
but Tucker got a hold of one and I can't find it.
I just hope he didn't eat it.

I have been seeing some pretty wonderful pincushions this week.
But for me a pincushion is utilitarian.
With that said I did "cutsiefy" this little cushion with a birdie.
(  have you noticed I seem to be in a bird phase  )
(  I hope it ends soon  )

This little birdie pincushion was made from scraps leftover from the owl quilt I made for the hexagon  hop.

I made this little pumpkin ten years ago,
 I think.
Not sure, could be even longer than that.

anyway these two will be enough for me

Hope you are having fun with this hop.
I have seen some very very pretty pincushions and
if I am not careful I could become a collector.
Those of you who really know me
know that this is so possible.

Thanks for stopping by.
Please take some time to visit
the other who are participating today.

Who loves Hexagons?

I am participating in a huge blog hop celebrating hexagons
and today is my day to share.

Thanks to Madame Samm for continuing to
come up with all these great ideas for the hops and
thanks to Debby our cheerleader, who has been so sweet with her reminder emails and her hard work getting all the links sorted out.
I am sure it is not as easy as it looks.
So what did I do to honor the Hexagon?
I purchased these

thinking I would make a grandmother's flower garden quilt.

But after making three english paper pieced hexagons I knew in my heart a flower garden was not going to happen.

I decided I didn't like hexagons at all.
I know there are so many other ways to play with
hexagons so I had to noodle out a new idea.

After a lot of thought I decided to start a quilt for
my grand baby, due in a few months.
I started by drawing a sketch and then a few pattern pieces.

Well instead of talking your ear off . . . I'll just show you a few pics.

I used hexagons as the background for this fused applique owl.

her eyes, upper wing, and tail feathers have hints of hexagons.
did you see her butterfly tattoo?

I allowed the hexagons to overlap the right side border.
I used a zig-zag stitch to quilt in the ditch

If you look closely you'll see birds on the leaves of the tree.

I used six wedges of fabric for each eye feather area and a wonky hexagon for each eye. I didn't want them to match exactly.
I also used  fabric pencils to shade a few areas. Her beak was too blah until I shaded it and made it stand out.
in progress

shading  done
hello !

I wanted it to be super puffy
so I used two layers of batting
finished size - 30"x 50" ( when binding is added )

So back to the question

Who loves hexagons?
well . . .
even though they look pretty good as a sky background,

Not me.

and what about all those paper hexagons?

well
I painted them

I'll be able to use these in my art journals.
Nothing wasted.

Thanks for stopping by !
Have a Happy day !

Ho Ho Holy Moly... it's time for holiday sewing

I can't think of a  better way to kick-start the
Holiday Sewing Season than a Quilters Blog Hop?
Madame Samm and Carol have the spirit and energy
to round us all up and put us in one spot.
Thanks to both of them for all their hard work.

The most difficult part of these hops is to actually come up with a good idea.
....   just one good idea.
I was pondering this and the lifeguard said....
"Make something practical and useful"
Duh !
Sometimes men can be so smart.

So what could I make that will be used a lot during the holidays?

A bag.

A very BIG bag.

A Mondo Bag.
A bag you can fit all your stuff in.

A bag big enough to haul all your stuff home.

I picked up this pattern last year at a  quilt show in Florida.
It is by QuiltSmart and has preprinted fusible interfacing.
You can't get any easier than that right?
This bag took 3 hours to whip up and it would have been even
quicker if I had used precut strips.
But I didn't have any of those so I cut my own strips.
I quilted "in the ditch" because I didn't want the ....
oh heck....because it's easy to stitch in the ditch...
who am I trying to kid.
I ran out of time again.
sheeeesh.
One of these days I am going to finish way way ahead of time.

I have these two quilt tops to finish before December too.

Thanks for stopping by for a look.
