I love how our lives are woven together.
.

one part rerun, two parts tutorial = so now you know

Now the first part of this post is a repeat from last summer....but I wanted to include it here because the question has come up again.    So this is for my new readers....the rest of you can scroll down for a cool technique.

******************

I'd like to answer a question a few people have asked.

"Why did you name your rescue RuffHaven? I mean, isn't that kinda cheesy?"
( yes, someone actually worded it that way )  But I am a big girl and it did not hurt my feelings.

Now the fact that dogs say "ruff" and my driveway is the "ruffest"  in the county,  had nothing to do with the naming of Ruff Haven.

I'll try to keep this short. because I know you really came for the show and tell.

Well, when I decided to open a Sanctuary for old dogs I first went to "Best Friends" The largest Animal sanctuary in the world. Yes...the world.  it on over 33,000 acres in Utah. You should go see it.  Plane, train, or automobile...or the internet...go see it .   Anyway.    They really know what they are doing when it comes to setting up a rescue so I took their
"How to start an Animal Sanctuary" Workshop
That was nine days of intense information.  When we got to the subject of business names etc... It looked like  ALL the good sanctuary names have been taken. So I set upon the task of trying to figure out a good name that would fit my sanctuary to a T.

I made a long list of possible names but  I kept coming back to    RUFF ... cheesy but very fitting.   Since most of my dogs are large and one form of Chow Mix or another, Something to do with Chow Chows was in order.

And since the fur around the neck of a Chow Chow is called a ruff,  it had to be part of the name.

   BINGO  !     we had a winner !

Now the Haven part was easy. My little corner of the world is my Haven.
So now you know:

RuffHaven
  Rescue and Sanctuary
gated community for canine seniors
(and those with special needs)

Now on with the show
One of my favorite techniques while working with collage is quite simple and has a wonderful effect. This can be done with a very dilute mixture of gel medium....but for cheepo art or "vacation art" as my friend  Diana  calls it...      I use this

so lets start with the few few layers of a collage
you've got the canvas ...and for the sake of simplicity...one layer of whatever you decide to start your collage
scuff it up , add a bit of paint,
I'm keeping it simple here because I want to show you the next step today
not next week

then get yourself some of this cool lacy paper...it comes in 12x12 sheets and sometimes parent sheets from a paper supply house.  I know it comes in a swirly pattern too...but I don't have any of that with me.....

It's similar to mulberry paper but a lot thinner and softer
like a fabric...but like a tissue

too bad we don't have touch-a-vision so you could feel this
it's thin...see the window
ok....enough of that

Now watch what happens when you slather a thin layer of the varnish on your collage then gently pat down the lacy paper...

shiny thin layer of varnish

layer on the paper and gently pat it down to make contact

now let it dry
go take a shower....
walk a dog...
eat lunch...

just let it dry

do not try to dry it with your heat gun because it will peel off
trust me
it only takes an hour or two
and
it will become softer as it dries
see..........instant softness

before:
 after

But wait...there's more
each time you add a layer of paper or paint or  whatever......you can tear the lacy paper to a size that's just a bit larger and layer it on...... and when it dries you can hardly tell where the new layer is.

since I have no idea where I am going with this collage
as usual

I'll share my secret....
I used this technique on the bird collage that I showed you in
click on the photo to go to the post about the bird collage

So now you know.

The next time we meet I'll show you another cool technique with this varnish...
.... if you're gonna buy.... you might as well use it up....

so happy you came to visit
please come back again ,

and I will add a few leaves.
I will post this on my sewing blog when I am finished
I have a question....I am having a hard time understanding WOYWW.  Is it the mess and or clutter and or supplies you are interested in ....Or is it the current project?   Someone please clear this up.

JB #5 - Amy's Sketch

Here is my card for this weeks Jingle Belle challenge. I apologize for the hit and run but I am exhausted.

 yes....I made 8 of these

yes...I know it's still that snowflake paper
I told you I have a lot of it

I need to tell Hazel I used a Santa

I love the simplicity of these

I love Martha Stewart's deep edge punches

 One for each reindeer
oh nuts
what about Rudolf   ?

This weeks challenge was to create a card using a sketch by Amy Tsuruta.  Now I have never met Amy but I want to thank her for such an easy sketch. I really needed it.  I am a bit burnt out on the Christmas cards. I am a bit burnt out on everything right now. Hopefully I can get back in the groove next week.
Here is her sketch:

See you all next week.....

insert catchy post title here----aka...brain dump

Thud !   yes that's me hitting the floor.  If you read my last post you know I am participating in a HUGE event.  There are so many links to so many blogs and so many creative folks all over the world....Yes I know they were there all along....but now their links are all on one page and that page is growing and growing... And as luck would have it....my link is spelled wrong... it's actually quite funny and for a brief moment I entertained the idea of starting another blog...  I know Lisa will get around to fixing the typo when she has time....the woman is a saint for putting the event together.
edited to add---- Yay   ....she fixed the typo...  no more Life at Ruffle Haven ...heehee
thanks lisa!  you're the greatest !
Well I won't keep blathering on about it....
if you want to know what I am talking about go to my last post.
I am not putting all those links here.....that's just too much work and my wrist is starting to hurt.

nuff said
In other news.....
I really do feel bad for everyone who is living through the snow storms up north...  My beach house might be the ugliest beach house in the world (really...if a hurricane blew it off the lot it would increase the property value)   ...but it's paid for and it's 80 degrees here.................

Which leads me to one more thing...........we are probably going to sell this house. I know we won't get much and it will probably be torn down by the new owner....But my life has been taken over by RuffHaven and going forward it will be too difficult to carry on with this snowbird lifestyle. But it's for the greater good. And any money we make will be put toward the dogs. Which brings me to this point

RuffHaven is a private sanctuary....which means we are privately funded....we do not ask for money...not your money or your neighbors money....  period

This may change in the future, but I doubt it. the Lifeguard and I are talking about retiring...
so we'll be this retired couple with ten dogs.......not a bad life.
This blog, and all my blogs, are my way of getting out there....meeting people...have some fun....
a little something I am working on
I never thought I would enjoy this so much...
I thank Leslie...aka TheCrookedStamper
She encouraged me to start a blog.....I think she was getting tired of my phone calls
She said..."you have alot of blog worthy stories... go start a blog"

so I did

One thing led to another and I actually have a few readers....
so I guess Leslie was right.
                                         Thanks for listening
